With every new baseball season comes a new version of OOTP for fans to enjoy. Out of the Park Baseball is considered the premier simulation baseball game you can find. It provides an outlet for all of those armchair general managers and managers, like myself, to build your favorite team into the next baseball dynasty.

I have been away from OOTP for a few years now, but I’ve gotten the itch to play it again this year. I thought one of the best ways to kick off my return to OOTP would be to do a simulation of the 2018 season and posting the results online. While every simulation will be different, I thought it would be fun to see what a one-time simulation provided. After this simulation, I will dive into actually playing the game and may post some updates from time to time about how my 2018 (and beyond) Braves are constructed and how they are faring.

Last year, based on 1,000 simulations, OOTP correctly predicted the Astros to win the World Series. This year, they have predicted the Dodgers to beat the Indians in the World Series. Let’s see what kind of stories my one-off simulation provides.

Onto the sim…

I played this sim with default rosters and not assigned to any team as to not have any impact on roster movements.

1May 1 Update

Right out of the gates, it looks like the Braves didn’t handle the stretch of 12 games against last year’s playoff teams as well as they did in real life. OOTP missed the message that this team is good and they’re already sunk to the bottom of the standings with a long climb upward.

2June 1 Update

Braves and Marlins still duking it out at the bottom of the division, but the Braves had a bit more of a respectable record during the month of May (12-15) than they did in April.

3All-Star Update

Braves finally climbed out of the NL East cellar as we head into the All-Star break, but at 23 games back, it looks like OOTP was convinced the Braves rebuild needed one more year.

4September 1 Update

I skipped ahead to September 1 for the next update. I checked out the trade deadline and there wasn’t any major player movement. But check out what the Braves did in the month of August. With a 23-16 record, the Braves have distanced themselves from the Marlins.

5End of Regular Season

The Braves finished the season playing good ball with a 15-14 month to finish the year. Somehow, OOTP decided the Reds could win 96 games. And the Yankees tied the 1906 Cubs and 2001 Mariners with 116 regular season wins.

Braves Batting Leaders

Not surprisingly, Freddie Freeman is dominating the Braves batting leaderboard. Ronald Acuña Jr. is second on the team with 23 homeruns, but he did it with just a .276 on-base percentage. Score one for thepainguy.

Braves Pitching Leaders

Julio Teheran was the only player with enough innings to qualify for the ERA title and it appears he just missed on taking down the crown. Geez. A 4-17 record with a 5.01 ERA.

Braves Notes

I'm very much okay with my place in an abusive relationship with the Atlanta Braves. I did a thing called Braves-Nation.com way back when and I turned Jim Bowden into Ralph for a day. Feel free to follow me on twitter for a lot of Braves ramblings and some bonus updates on the other abusive relationship I'm in—this one with the Arkansas Razorbacks. Sports are painful.
